An Introduction

Having a strong social, cultural and educational background, Dr. Yogesh Dube, is committed to bring complete literacy among all adults and facilitate free and compulsory formal elementary education for all the children. To realize the same, he has initiated various campaigns and movements to mobilise the public to make them realize that education is the key to access to the information & knowledge and knowledge is the power. In this regard he has been doing policy advocacy with the Government to open schools,improve infrastructure and appoint trained teachers. His campaign in rural areas of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh created awareness among the community in general and parents in particular to send their children to schools and mobilized the teachers to enhance the enrolment and retention of the children.

Dr. Dube’s extensive work on literacy and education among the children, youth as well as general public and passion of having a literate country, has paid him huge dividend in terms of recognition, honours, rewards and awards. Such recognitions not only encouraged him to do more but also multiplied his activities towards development of education in the country. He is recipient of the National Youth Award 1996 (by Ministry of H.R.D., Government of India), highest honour given to the youth by Government of India for National Development and Social Service, “Rastriya Yuvak Samman” in 2001 and “Shreshth Baalak Paalak Pruraskar” in 2004 for his unstinted activity on education for the children and youth.

Dr. Dube is founder and a trustee of “Bhartiya Vikas Sansthan”, a Non-Government Organization, active in Child Relief in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The Child Relief Centre has been relentlessly working on education of the poor and socially disadvantaged children. Through the Child Relief Centre, he has been personally involved in rescue operations of children from various hazardous occupations and processes in Mumbai, Thane and Bhadohi, and had made efforts to rehabilitate them educationally. His focus has been on mental and physical health of the school-going children, which is evident from the health camps, seminars and workshops organized by him. Concentrating on the children in-and-around Railway Station, he encouraged them to improve their life and living standard by rehabilitating them educationally as well as vocationally. Dr. Dube has effectively been intervening in the tribal dominated areas as well as the Naxal hit areas of the country to improve the education system to keep the coming generation out of the poverty situations and clutch of disruptive forces. Dr. Dube believes that major problems relating to children and youth would come to an end, if every child in our country is provided with quality education.
